Weekly Shonen Jump's circulation dips below one million, signaling the end of a manga era.
Weekly Shonen Jump remains Japan's top manga magazine, but its print circulation has fallen below one million for the first time.
Weekly Shonen Jump is still the biggest manga magazine in Japan, but its print circulation is shrinking. Recent stats show it dropped to 985,000 copies per week, falling below a million for the first time since 2008. Back in '94, it peaked at a remarkable 6.53 million copies thanks to hits like Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk. Fast forward to 2017, and it was already under two million. Now, it’s down to about half of that.
The shift to digital is driving this change. People love reading manga on their phones for the convenience it provides. There's also concern that digital platforms might lead to choice paralysis; with so many options, readers might stick to familiar titles instead of exploring new ones. As it stands, it’s not that manga is losing fans; it's just that they're finding new ways to enjoy it.
