Osaka court rejects ban on hanging executions.
The Osaka District Court dismissed a ban on hanging executions, citing lack of grounds and adherence to existing criminal judgments.
OSAKA – The Osaka District Court just shut down a bid from three death-row inmates aiming to stop executions by hanging. They argued it goes against an international treaty that bans cruel punishments. The lawyer claimed that these executions are "cruel and should not be allowed to continue."
However, Presiding Judge Noriko Yokota wasn't having it. She said fighting over execution methods in court isn't the way to go and pointed out that Japan's system supports hanging. Allowing the ban would conflict with finalized judgments. She also noted that a 1955 Supreme Court ruling found no cruelty in hanging. After the ruling, the plaintiffs' attorney slammed it, saying, "This is the worst possible judgment."
