New data shows foreign tourists in Japan consume more rice than previously believed.
Foreign visitors to Japan now consume more rice daily than locals, averaging 570 grams compared to the Japanese average of 330-340 grams.
Did you know that overseas visitors are now munching on more rice than the locals in Japan? On July 27, Japan's Ministry of Agriculture revealed that tourists are digging into an average of 570 grams of cooked rice daily—about four bowls. That’s a hefty jump from the previous 350 grams. The top rice munchers? Vietnam leads with 718 grams, the U.S. follows at 565 grams, and China at 546 grams. Meanwhile, Japan locals stick to about 330-340 grams a day.
This surge in rice consumption is linked to visitors enjoying not just sushi but also onigiri rice balls throughout the day. In total, foreign tourists are projected to consume 82,000 tonnes of polished rice between July 2025 and June 2026—an increase from earlier estimates due to Japan's recent rice shortage crisis. The government is now considering these visitor habits to better evaluate and manage supply. It’s about time they adjust to modern demands and avoid the chaos of the past.
