Japanese factories enhance efficiency by using video game development techniques, collaborating with Fortnite's creator.
Maruwa's factory uses a game-like system called Real Focus, developed with Epic Games, to boost employee productivity and engagement.

In Wakayama City, Maruwa, a linen service company, tapped into Epic Games for some serious motivation magic in their factory. You walk in and see machines working hard, but wait—what's up with those monitors showing farm games? Here’s the scoop: when employees finish prepping bedsheets, they trigger an action meter for a game character they control. As they work, their in-game avatar collects resources and constructs a village, turning repetitive tasks into something exciting.
This cool concept, called Real Focus, comes from Nissho Elektron Co. They wanted to spice up factory life and, after a little help from Epic Games, launched it in Summer 2023. The result? Productivity jumped by about 8% on average within the first week—some employees even hitting 18%! Workers love seeing their virtual village grow, which makes those repetitive tasks way more rewarding. Instead of just prepping sheet sets, they’re finding diamonds and upgrading a community—talk about a dopamine hit!
