Gut bacteria linked to Japan's colorectal cancer cases.
A Japanese study found colibactin toxin in nearly half of colorectal cancer cases, linking it to genetic mutations and potential prevention.
A Japanese research team revealed that nearly half of colorectal cancer cases in Japan show genetic mutations from a toxin produced by certain E. coli strains. This toxin, colibactin, is believed to play a role in cells turning cancerous. Professors Shinichi Yachida and Tatsuhiro Shibata lead this study, which aims to find ways to prevent colorectal cancer by targeting these harmful bacteria.
The researchers analyzed DNA from 200 colorectal cancer patients and found that colibactin was linked to carcinogenesis in about 45% of cases, jumping to 70% in patients under 40. While bacteria like Helicobacter pylori have known removal methods, it’s unclear if E. coli can be eradicated just yet. The team hopes to identify how colibactin causes these mutations and potentially develop a prevention strategy.
