So, our reporters decided to escape Tokyo with just 5,000 yen and no plan—except to see who could travel the farthest by 5 p.m. Mr. Sato went west, while Go headed north, determined to see who’d win. With plenty of options at Tokyo Station, Mr. Sato jumped on a Tokaido Line train to Atami, while Go tried to catch a bus to Sendai but had to settle for a ticket to Iwaki.

Mr. Sato arrived in Atami, enjoyed a meal, and tried a drinkable dessert, while Go savored a delicious kaisendon in Iwaki. As the day progressed, Mr. Sato moved on to Hamamatsu, running low on budget, while Go reached Odaka. By 5 p.m., they calculated their distances: Mr. Sato at 233 km and Go at 237 km—Go took the win! Now they’re already scheming for another trip with less direction but more fun.
