Japan's foreign resident population is increasing significantly, while the native population continues to decline, according to government data.
Listen up! Japan’s foreign population is growing fast while its overall numbers shrink. A new study shows that from January 1, 2025, to 2026, Japan had 1,436 municipalities where the local population decreased, but the number of foreign residents actually increased. The biggest jump happened in Osaka, adding 25,056 foreign residents. Other cities like Yokohama, Nagoya, and Kyoto are also seeing significant growth.
Here's the kicker: in all of the top 10 areas for foreign resident growth, the Japanese population dropped! Some foreign resident increases even outpaced local population declines. For instance, Osaka had 19,865 more foreign residents than the Japanese residents lost. It’s clear that immigration is a major factor and not just people moving around or having kids.
